Tropical Rainforest Plants Orchids
There are many endangered plants in the tropical rainforest and many are wiped out before we have ever discovered them.
Tropical rainforest plants orchids. One major reason orchids are so successful in the forest is because they produce tiny seeds measured in microns that number in the hundreds of thousands. Ferns lichens mosses orchids and bromeliads are all epiphytes. If you decide you want to grow them provide them with light but make sure its filtered so they dont get exposed to direct sunlight.
Though orchids grow most commonly in ground soil outside of tropical environments in the Amazon orchids grow from both the forest floor and as epiphytes or flowers that grow on a host commonly the branches and limbs of trees. Some more famous examples are the bird of paradise flower the giant lilys and the carnivorous pitcher plants. Higher up in the understory you will find exotic orchids climbing plants and types of ficus plants.
Most species live in tropical rainforests but they can also be found close to the Arctic Circle. They belong to the family Orchidaceae which is claimed by some authorities to be the largest of the plant families. At the pace of the current rainforest destruction it is estimated that 137 species are wiped out daily.
There can be up to three million seeds in a single orchid seedpod. The balloon-like seed coat coupled with the small seed size enables orchid seeds to be dispersed over great areas by wind currents. Native to warm humid environments orchid plants thrive in the Amazon rainforest.
Most orchid species grow in tropical forests but others can be found in semi-desert regions near the seashore and in the tundra. The tropical rainforest is also home to nepenthes or pitcher plants. Other orchid species found in the tropical rainforest include the apricot orchid fairy bells and jewel orchid.
Meanwhile orchids in dry regions have thick leaves covered in wax which helps them maintain the little moisture they manage to get. They use orchid fiber to make noken string bags. The orchid family is a group of very hardy plants that are very abundant in the wild.
